“On behalf of the United States Air Force, I want to once again thank the Air Force Sergeants Association for being such a strong advocate for our Airmen across all of the enlisted grades, as well as for retirees, veterans, and military families. We appreciate all you do, and it is an honor to serve with you in the world’s finest Air Force.”

— Honorable Michael B. Donley, SECAF, August 15, 2012

112th Congress, 2nd Session

  • Senate: In recess; contact lawmakers via State offices
  • House:  In recess; contact lawmakers via District offices

Still On the Clock

Our Congress might be on a lengthy scheduled recess, but your AFSA is not!  Three of your four registered lobbyists swept through Capitol Hill late last week hitting up a number of congressional offices.  Legislators may be in their home states and districts, but there are still some key staffers left behind…and we found them.  Unfortunately, every office we pressed for answers (including the Senate Armed Services Committee) had “no official comments” to report on the FY 2013’s National Defense Authorization Act.  We’d love to be wrong, but rumors indicate this must-pass legislation will not advance until after the November General Election.

Playing Sequestration like “Mega-Millions”

How likely are you to pick the next winning combination of lottery numbers?  There are only six choices to make if you count the mega ball, how hard could it be?  You have some known variables; one pot of balls numbered between 1 and 56 (pick 5 of them) and one pot of balls numbered between 1 and 46 (pick 1).  Just pick the right variable 6 times and you’re a winner.  Millions of people are sure that their lucky numbers will come through for them, but in the end there are usually only one or two folks who get it right.

On August 7, President Obama signed H.R. 5872, the Sequestration Transparency Act of 2012—legislation requiring our President to submit a detailed report within 30 days to Congress outlining how sequestration would be implemented if lawmakers fail to prevent the sweeping budget cuts.

Who wins the House?  Who wins the Senate?  Who wins the White House?  Assuming it’s just a two party race; those three questions provide eight possible combinations of how the government would be set up.  Each of those combinations brings with it a second tier of possibilities on which direction we’re taken by a sequestration, reconciliation, or other political budgetary result.  Throw a third tier of variables into the mix by allowing for how a vote would go with a potentially overhauled Congress and it gets even more complicated.

While there are some known variables up for grabs (a must pass piece of legislation, a must cut budget, 435 seats in the House, 33 seats in the Senate, and 1 seat on Pennsylvania Ave), trying to forecast how it all shakes out is like trying to predict which ping pong ball makes it up the tube into the winner’s row.

Info for Absentee Voters

The Federal Voting Assistance Program’s website has now become smart phone friendly.  There is an actual link at FVAP’s site ( if you go there via desktop computer.  If you go directly with your mobile device it will automatically redirect you to a mobile-friendly site.  There is a lot of useful information on this site for individuals as well as for voting assistance officers at base level.  With 70 days left until the General Election, AFSA encourages it’s membership to ensure they are locked, cocked and ready to rock the polls come November 6th.  It’s a huge deal when someplace likeIraq,EgyptorGreececonduct their elections, but all too often many Americans take this constitutional right for granted. Regardless of how you vote, it is the number one right a responsible citizen exercises…so get out there and “flex” your citizenship!  Make sure your families and friends do too.
