Budgets, Scholarships & Recess

President Obama is expected to sign the FY 2013 Congressional spending bill before the March 27 deadline, thus preventing a government shutdown.  Key items items of interest are provisions directing DoD to restore the military Tuition Assistance program and language barring TRICARE fee increases through 30 September 2013. Both chambers of Congress adopted budget resolutions used to define their fiscal positions during the upcoming debate on FY 2014 budget appropriations. For the Senate, it’s the first time the chamber has approved an annual spending blueprint in four years. For some, that might be a reason to celebrate.  However, the numbers of differences between this pair of non-binding documents are any indication, we can expect heavy turbulence over government funding in the coming months.

HOT: The deadline to apply for AFSA’s Scholarship programs is rapidly approaching. To be considered, applications for the upcoming academic year must be post marked and received   by AFSA headquarters before March 31st.  Incomplete packages and those received after March 31 are ineligible for consideration.

Last but not least, Congress is currently in a recess until April 8.  Although most Members of Congress are no longer here Washington, our advocacy efforts on your behalf will continue. Building upon our recent advocacy for TA, we are working our strategy in other areas like pay and healthcare. At the same time, AFSA’s Legislative Team will continue to meet with DoD officials and congressional staff to strengthen our ever-important relationships. During this timeframe, AFSA members are strongly encouraged to meet with their elected officials locally to voice your concerns with them. Below are links to help you find yours:
