AFSA Chapter 1681 Legislative Update//1 Aug 2014//

1. Yesterday, the United States passed S. 3230, Veterans Reform Bill. This bill now goes to President Obama for signature. An article in the Air Force Times on the Senate passage of this bill reads, in part, “The legislation allots $10 billion to expand private care options for veterans who face medical appointment wait times of more than 30 days or who live more than 40 miles from a VA health facility.

“Officials will create a ‘veterans choice card’ that patients can take to doctors outside the system, to receive care while the department picks up the bill. To be eligible, veterans will need to already be enrolled in the VA health care system or have served in a combat theater in the last five years.” This would apply to veterans waiting more than 30 days for care or those who live more than 40 miles from a VA medical facility. 2. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., says he will allow the FY 2015 National Defense Authorization Act bill to move forward in September when Congress returns from its August recess. Because the Senate will only work a few days in September and none in October, prior to the elections, Reid says Senators should be prepared to work weekends in September, if necessary.
